After a summer of some great entry-level whitewater kayaking on Split Rock Creek, I’ve decided my next boat purchase will be a true whitewater craft. I realize this is a little silly, considering I live in the prairie and with the exception of SRC, there isn’t any whitewater around here, but it’s something I want to learn more about and am willing to travel to do so. I figure I can turn any future whitewater trips into bigger getaway weekends with the family. A win-win for everyone, right? 🙂
I think I’ve identified myself as a river running kayaker. I enjoy the thrill of rapids, but also enjoy traveling from point A to point B, stopping for the occasional play spot. With that in mind, it seems like I need a good all-around boat and all of my research keeps pointing back to one particular kayak: the Pyranha Ammo.
However, there are a million options out there. It’s almost overwhelming. If anyone has recommendations or ideas, I’d love to hear them! While I wish I could buy one tomorrow, I probably won’t be pulling the trigger until next year.

A few thoughts:
Plenty of whitewater options in the Black Hills. Get in touch with Justin Herreman or Kelly Lane
I am also thinking about a whitewater boat. I kind of like the Dagger Mamba, but am more interested in finding a good deal on a used boat. I may check out global market in RC to see if they sell off any of there rental boats.

I’m all about a used boat as well. If you search Craigslist, you can find tons of used boats on there – lots of them as close as Minneapolis. Buying a used rental is a great idea too.

Also, I am not sure if you saw it or not, but there is a post on my blog from when I went creek boating with Justin, Kelly, and some other of the Black Hills Paddlers in April.

I did see that back when you posted it in April. It looked like it was a TON of fun and, if you ever go back, would love to tag along. I figure outside of Minnesota and Wisconsin, the Hills would likely be a common destination for me if I ever do get the Ammo.

Fat Paddler
I just bought a Liquidlogic Remix XP10 and I’m totally in love with it. Of course, I hardly ever run rivers, but I got it for surf and rockgardening, and it just LOVES the froth and swell, even with a fat bastard like me in it. Definitely worth testing out! Cheers – FP

The more I read about the Remix XP10, on your blog and elsewhere, the more it looks like the ideal boat. My only hang up is its length. I’m currently in a 12 ft Dagger and moving to a boat that’s only 2 ft shorter… I wonder if it will be short enough for what I have in mind. But I’m torn between the Remix XP10, the Piranha Ammo and now, the Liquid Logic Remix 79. I have to be the most indecisive S.O.B. on the planet. Good thing time is on my side with this one 🙂
Thanks for the feedback!
