Split Rock Creek

Other than the faster moving mountain creeks in the western part of the state, Split Rock Creek is easily the best place to paddle in the eastern side of South Dakota. It’s generally a bit faster than other rivers in the area (up to 10 mph in spots) and is full of shoots and runs of class 1 to class 2 rapids – depending on water levels.

Water levels, however, vary greatly and can change in a short amount of time. You can check real-time streamflow data on the USGS website. Gage height needs to be at, or greater than, 4 feet for an enjoyable, safe paddle. Anything lower and you really run the risk of snagging or even stalling in what are still pretty fast rapids – a potentially dangerous situation if you try to walk your boat to deeper water. Anything over 7 feet gets a little wild. You should have a helmet and know what you’re doing.

A popular route, due to its easy access and take out, starts at Split Rock Park, in Garretson, SD., through Palisades State Park, to the bridge on Rd 257. I’m not sure how many river miles it is, but it takes about 2 to 2.5 hours. Here’s a map:
